Redesigning the Search Experience
The Diffusion Marketplace serves as a digital repository where VA staff can share and discover, health solutions developed at VA facilities across the country.
The Challenge
Our clients wanted the website to be accessible to not only health staff but also veterans.
Through user testing and analytics, I prioritized updating our Search Page. Previously, it was overwhelmed with filters, making it difficult for health practitioners and vets to find relevant health solutions.
- 85+ filters are taking up too much screen space
-
Lack of visibility of applied filters
- 62% of users abandon their search.
The Solution
By working directly with stakeholders, I consolidated filters and filter items. Collaborating alongside engineers enabled us to implement a robust and familiar search pattern inspired by e-commerce.
Trade-offs
It was important to ensure that we retained website functionality for tech-savvy health staff while incorporating plain language for veterans.
A compromise that I identified from user testing was incorporating modals to explain technical jargon to vets.
Redesign Impact
Health solutions are now more discoverable to staff and veterans.
- Reduced search result page abandonment by 37%.
- Facilitated rapid scaling of proven healthcare solutions across 1,380 facilities
- Adherence to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and Section 508 Compliance.
